How To Install Transmission Torrent Client Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver


Step 1: Install Transmission

1.1.a Upgrade / Update server

sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y

1.1.b Install Transmission 

sudo apt-get install transmission-cli transmission-common transmission-daemon

Step 2: Configure Transmission

2.1.a Create Download folders for transmission

sudo mkdir ~/Downloads
sudo mkdir ~/Downloads/Completed
sudo mkdir ~/Downloads/Incomplete
sudo mkdir ~/Downloads/Torrents

2.1.b Add user to Transmission group

sudo usermod -a -G debian-transmission "username"

2.1.c Change group ownership

sudo chgrp -R debian-transmission /home/"username"/Downloads

2.1.d Set access permissions

sudo chmod -R 775 /home/"username"/Downloads

2.2.a Stop Transmission daemon

sudo /etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop
steken@plex:/$ sudo /etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop
[sudo] password for steken:
[ ok ] Stopping transmission-daemon (via systemctl): transmission-daemon.service.

2.2.b Edit Transmission configuration file

sudo nano /etc/transmission-daemon/settings.json

"download-dir": "/home/username/Downloads/Complete",
"incomplete-dir": "/home/username/Downloads/Incomplete",
"incomplete-dir-enabled": true,
"rpc-authentication-required": false,
"rpc-whitelist-enabled": false,

# Add the parameters below at the end before closing bracket

"watch-dir": "/home/username/Downloads/Torrents",
"watch-dir-enabled": true

Exit & Save

2.2.c Start Transmission daemon

sudo /etc/init.d/transmission-daemon start

2.3.a Add default Transmission Web UI port  9091 to firewall

sudo ufw allow 9091

2.4.a Logon to the Transmission Web UI

# Default user and password is transmission
